The groundwork
for this department to form the Theta Pi chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota was started in 1994.
The group name was The Women’s Music Consort. Starting February 29, 1996, meetings for
this budding chapter were held on a weekly basis.
The
chapter was then formally established on April 19, 1997. The founding members were as follows:

Since then, the sisters of Theta Pi have greatly contributed to the music

In addition to the establishment
of the chapter, the Virginia S. Purtle scholarship fund was created. Virginia S. Purtle was a professor at Christopher
Newport University in the Social Work Department who held a great love and affinity for music. The scholarship, to this
day, is awarded annually to an active Sigma Alpha Iota member, based on good academic standing and quality of service
to the chapter and to the music department.
